Interesting Results from Sterling’s Auction
On 12/12 the Sterling’s had a long[3 1/2 hours/internet speed issues] auction for 238 lots and some of the highlights were that there were several “hard stone” canes which ranged from $5,000[all hammer prices] wonderful rock crystal with turquoise, stunning heliotrope with diamonds[$4750], smoky quartz Brigg[$4250] to a $1800 rock crystal Brigg. As with most of his auction there were several simple hard stone balls[recent?] on a stick which did not sell well. Some other highlights included some nicely carved ivories [elephants-$1800, $1500& $1,100 , eagle-$2400, Indian+ alligator–$3000,swan —$1700 and the ever popular cats —a cat “wedding” for $1700!]. A unique Brigg sword cane went for $ 2750 and a classy blackmorr of ebony& ivory —$4100. The special gold quartz presentation cane went for a bargain price of $4750 [ remember when these were $10,000+?]. Interestingly the raw erotic’s [ a usual feature of his auctions] were not selling with their usual high premium, as were the hammer prices on gold knobs and folk art canes. The nauticals which were carved whale tooth on whale bone shafts sold at a premium to those with whale tooth on wood shafts.
